Shoutout to Dodgeball Kuching Association
KUCHING (March 19): Kuching Dodgeball Association (KDA) has embarked on a major step to promote the sport with the launch of the Kuching Dodgeball Social League (KDSL) at Arena Sukan last Thursday.
The league is aimed at showcasing the skills of both experienced and new players in a more competitive environment to prepare them for future tournaments locally and externally.
Five teams – Tsuwave, Supernova, Crocidily, Crocodoodle and Santai Pantai – which comprised players from Tsunami Dodgeball Club, Swinburne Gators Dodgeball Club and Unimas Hawks Dodgeball Club play in the league held every Thursday.
The first two matches saw Tsuwave dominating Crocodoodle 6–2 and Supernova edging Santai Pantai 6–5.
“It has always been my dream to create high quality competitions and league in the dodgeball community in Kuching.
“The players will be able to experience how an official game is played and managed as they will claw it out for the next seven weeks,” said KDA Kuching manager Darren Robin.
Darren feels excited yet anxious as the league is viewed as a major stepping stone for the fraternity in Kuching.
Tsunami club president Brian Chin Yung Liang, who also competes in the league, believes the league can help to raise playing standards.
“KDSL brings a new challenge to newer players while bringing a more structured sense of competition for the experienced ones,” he said.
“It will also serve as a platform to attract more talented players who are just waiting to be discovered, as it improves their skill development,” he added.
Tsuwave captain Felix Isadore David agrees.
“I think KDSL will be an emerging platform that helps to garner interest towards the sport and foster enthusiasm to improve both as a player and as a team in the beautiful game of dodgeball,” he said.
A fraternal spirit is apparent even among competing teams in the league.
Narrowly making a comeback, the Santai Pantai captain Reuben Ling showed immense pride in his team despite the loss.
“It was mainly the teams’ willingness to support each other, boosting each other’s morale when the situation seems bleak. We decided to just take it one game at a time and learn from our mistakes, which resulted in us almost drawing against one of the stronger teams,” said captain Reuben Ling whose Santai Pantai lost narrowly to Supernova.
KDA was established in July 2022 as a grassroots community with a mission to introduce the sport to the city of Kuching.
Dodgeball has seen some success in West Malaysia with the national team winning gold medals at the Dodgeball World Championships in recent years.
Catch Kuching Dodgeball Social League every Thursday at Arena Sukan from 8pm to 10pm.
